Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Despite being new in the political scene, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has already made an impact in American politics. A member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, she has served New York’s 14th congressional district as its representative since 2019. Her election to the post has made her the youngest woman to ever do so. After graduating with a degree in international relations and economics, Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender and waitress. She then became heavily involved in politics back in 2016, working for Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. Her close relations to Sanders elevated her into a symbol of an emerging young leftist movement in America.
During her tenure in office, Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for progressive policies and has been vocal about voicing her opinion on various issues both in and outside the U.S. Perhaps her most well-known piece of legislation was her first, the Green New Deal. A non-binding resolution, the deal called for the overhaul of the American economy towards a carbon-neutral path. Today, she remains a promising figure in the halls of power in Washington.
